The Art of Mitochondrial Biology

Together with patients we have worked with local microscopy artist Corinne Lewis Ward to produce a display based around mitochondrial biology. The display was exhibited at Eldon Garden Shopping Centre in Newcastle Upon Tyne. Corrine Lewis Ward, researchers from the centre, as well as patients who participated in the project, were available over the weekend to answer questions about the work and the research going on within our Centre.

This work was funded by NICAP and an FMS Newcastle University engagement grant. Work produced included:

  • A gold leaf teapot printed with words the patients found important to them and were relating to mitochondrial disease.
  • Placemats with images of colon, muscle, and neurons on that had been stained for important mitochondrial markers.
  • Cups and saucers with black and white versions of the microscopy images on, along with illustrations of healthy and bad mitochondria
  • A 2 x 1.5m silk, colon print.
