I am a Senior Healthcare Science Assistant within the Newcastle NCG Mitochondrial Diagnostic Service, where we receive patient samples sent from across the world. I prepare samples for analysis which aids diagnosis of life-changing mitochondrial disorders which affect patients in a multitude of different ways.
During my BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science degree I researched neurodegenerative effects of mutations in genes controlling mitochondrial function. I now really enjoy being able to work in a multidisciplinary diagnostic team which utilises molecular genetic techniques, histochemistry and biochemistry, alongside the Mitochondrial Research Group, whose findings are able to influence the service provided by the diagnostic team.
