The largest international conference on mitochondrial disease, Euromit, will be taking place exactly one year from today! The meeting will be held from 14–17th June 2020 in NewcastleGateshead.

The Wellcome
Centre was established to integrate basic and clinical mitochondrial disease
research and to train young researchers.
Taking place at the iconic Sage Gateshead and hosted by the Wellcome Centre for Mitochondrial Research (WCMR), Newcastle University and Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (NuTH), Euromit is expected to attract over 650 clinicians and scientists from across the world.
The prestigious
four-day event will host talks from globally renowned experts in the
mitochondrial field, which is the study of mitochondria needed for energy
production within the human body.
Paul Szomoru, director
of business events at NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau, said: “We are
thrilled to have been selected as the host city for Euromit 2020. NewcastleGateshead
is a truly globally accessible city and we look forward to welcoming delegates
from around the world.
“NewcastleGateshead has a track record of hosting high-profile medical conferences and this is testament to our sector strengths in medical sciences and research, as well as having one of the country’s leading medical schools at Newcastle University. The event will be a great opportunity to showcase these strengths not just to the UK but internationally.”

Professor Sir Doug Turnbull, Director of the WCMR, based at Newcastle University, said: “Newcastle is world-leading in the area of mitochondrial research. The conference will provide a superb opportunity for Newcastle University and Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to showcase research, clinical expertise and impact, to the largest international audience in the mitochondrial field”.
“Everything we
do is to improve the lives of those affected by mitochondrial disease and to
help patients and their families both now and in the future. As well as the
main conference, we are also hosting a joint patient conference with support
from The Lily Foundation, the UK’s leading mitochondrial disease charity, allowing
patients to interact and engage with clinicians, research scientists and policy
makers.”
Dr Julie
Murphy, Public Engagement Manager for the WCMR, Newcastle University, said: “We
are very excited about Euromit 2020 and want to ensure it is a truly
collaborative event for everyone involved. We will be sharing more information
about the meeting over the coming months and would encourage people to visit
the Euromit 2020 website or follow us on social media”.
